Pages of Emotion: Patterns of Parent-Child Emotion Socialization Through 7 Years of Storybook Reading

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Prior research shows the importance of parents’ emotion socialisation (Gottman et al., 1996) and the impact that parenting has on children’s emotion recognition abilities (Kujawa et al., 2014). However, previous research has failed to break down different parenting practices and their specific patterns and possible influences on child outcomes. This study fills in the gaps by including several different specific parenting practices in a longitudinal study that observed parents and children interacting instead of depending on parent’s self-reported survey responses.
