LiBaPO4:Eu3+ phosphors for solid-state lighting: Structural, luminescence and Judd–Ofelt insights

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In the present study, LiBaPO 4 phosphors activated with different concentrations of Eu 3+ ions were successfully synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The synthesized phosphors were comprehensively characterized to evaluate their structural, morphological, vibrational and photoluminescence properties. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of a single-phase orthorhombic LiBaPO 4 crystal structure without the presence of any detectable impurity phases, demonstrating the successful incorporation of Eu 3+ ions into the host lattice. The surface morphology and elemental composition were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), which revealed well-crystallized particles containing the expected constituent elements. In addition, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the characteristic vibrational modes of the PO 4 3− groups and verified that the fundamental phosphate framework remained structurally stable after Eu 3+ incorporation. The emission spectra exhibited intense orange-red luminescence dominated under 396 nm excitation by the hypersensitive 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 electric-dipole transition centered at 617 nm. The emission intensity increased with increasing Eu 3+ concentration and reached a maximum at 3 mol%, after which it decreased because of concentration quenching arising from non-radiative energy transfer between neighboring Eu 3+ ions. Using Judd–Ofelt analysis, spectroscopic parameters of Eu 3+ ions viz intensity parameters (Ω 2 and Ω 4 ), radiative lifetimes, transition probabilities, branching and asymmetry ratios, optical gain, gain bandwidth and stimulated emission cross-sections were evaluated. Due to superior photoluminescence performance, favorable colorimetry and efficient radiative properties, LiBaPO 4 :Eu 3+ phosphors show great promising red-emitting materials for near-ultraviolet (n-UV)-excited white LEDs, display technologies and advanced photonics.
