Thermodynamic and economic comparison of pressure shift freezing and isochoric pressurisation without a hyperbaric pump

Year: 2026
Type: dataset
Abstract: This work develops a common thermodynamic framework to quantify that trade-off per kilogram of useful frozen product between −5 and −20 °C, with all water and ice properties evaluated from the IAPWS formulations, a temperature-dependent refrigeration coefficient of performance, and a cycle-level pressurisation efficiency that accounts for the irrecoverable decompression energy loss of batch processing. A three-way comparison of batch PSF, an aspirational continuous flow-through architecture, and IFP shows that IFP consumes 57–89 kJ kg⁻¹ less total electrical energy than batch PSF across the range and is energetically competitive with flow-through processing above approximately −10 °C, below which the sacrificial-freezing penalty makes flow-through preferable.
