Synergistic cardioprotective effects of beetroot and blueberry extracts: a focused review
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the most important and late causes of death and disability globally and a cardiovascular prevention should be elaborated. Beetroot extract and blueberry extract (BBE) are two natural extracts that have been of interest for their cardiovascular effects and suggested as functional foods. Beetroot is rich in dietary nitrate, and also contains betalains and polyphenols that are significant for their nitric oxide boosting, vasodilatory, and anti-oxidant effects. Blueberries contain antioxidants, anthocyanins, and flavonoids, which are useful in maintaining a healthy lipid profile and inflammation. Evidence of use of beetroot for reducing blood pressure, improving exercise capacity, BBE for a lipid profile and vascular function. Various studies have been released that have said there are synergies when they are combined. More research is needed to establish which formulations are most likely to be useful, and to understand the mechanisms that will be used in clinical practice when managing CVD.
