Abstract: Maritime routes ensure connectivity between nations with several goods flowing through them, while ports are the junctions in this network as they manage a wide spectrum of commodities from raw materials to finished goods. Ports also generate employment across several sectors and support a variety of industries. A seaport is a maritime facility featuring docks, cranes, and storage for international trade, where ships load or unload cargo, container and passengers. Key functions of seaports include customs, warehousing, and ship services, with major ports like Shanghai, PSA, DP World or Rotterdam handling massive volumes of goods around the globe. On the other hand, ports in Bangladesh (Chittagong, Mongla, Payra) are vital for regional commerce. Presently, ports, the prime movers of economic operations, are acknowledged as essential capital infrastructure. Smart ports are automated facilities which leverage advanced digital technologies such as sensors, big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), augmented reality (AR), digital twins, Internet of Things (IoTs), Big-data, and various automation systems to optimize overall operational efficiency. These tools manage cargo movement while employing sustainable procedures to conserve the environment. Besides, smart ports now offer faster and advanced services to all stakeholders connected to their operations such as shipping companies, customs agencies, local communities and other relevant parties. Renewable energy sources, electric vehicle charging stations, onshore power supply, and smart logistics infrastructure are some of the several sustainable features which define smart ports in present day contest. This research study will illustrate the present status and future development of Bangladesh sea ports along with global requirement of smart port concept.
