Multifunctional tungsten bronze-based nanocomposite: strategy on fabrication and mechanism for improving near-infrared shielding and photocatalytic activity

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Tungsten bronze (MxWO3) holds promise for solar-related applications as it can shield near-infrared (NIR) light and has been proven to be an alternative solution for addressing both the energy crisis and environmental concerns. Advances in tungsten bronze-based nanocomposites have demonstrated superior NIR shielding and photocatalytic properties compared to their counterparts, unlocking significant application potential. Recent work has shown that targeted modifications to the crystal structure and morphology of these nanocomposites can be achieved through tailored synthesis. Crucially, these synthetic strategies are pivotal for enhancing localized surface plasmon resonance, which directly leads to improved NIR shielding performance. This review summarizes numerous strategies for boosting the photocatalytic properties of alkali tungsten bronze-based nanocomposites and elucidates the underlying mechanisms. Their multifunctionality, enabling diverse applications, is also discussed. Finally, a detailed perspective on the remaining challenges and future opportunities is presented to stimulate further research. Graphic abstract
