Prevalence and correlates of vaping cessation attempts among vape users from Arab countries

Abstract: The current study examined the prevalence and correlates of vaping cessation attempts among vape users residing in Arab countries. Data for the cross-sectional study was collected online between February and May 2023 via the Blue platform, targeting social media users aged 18–60 years who regularly vaped and resided in Arab countries. Stepwise binary logistic regression was used to analyze the association between sociodemographic factors, vaping behaviors, and social factors and life-time vaping cessation attempts. Among 428 participants, less than half (44%) had made a serious quit attempt. Multivariate analyses showed that users of vape pens or e-cigarettes (lower yield devices) were twice as likely to try quitting compared to those using mods or pods (higher yield devices). Daily vapers had lower odds of attempting to quit, while those who experienced side effects were three times more likely to have attempted quitting. This study reveals that nearly half of vapers have attempted to quit, with cessation attempts being more common among those using lower yield devices, which tend to yield lower nicotine, and those experiencing side effects. In contrast, daily vapers were less likely to attempt quitting; suggesting that more frequent users may face greater challenges in cessation efforts. These findings underscore the importance of tailored interventions to support quitting, particularly for daily vapers and users of high-nicotine-yield devices.
