Leachate and Groundwater Quality Assessment at Karangrejo Landfill, Lampung Province, Indonesia: LPI-WQI Evaluation and Contamination Pathway Analysis

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of leachate and groundwater and the potential contamination of leachate to groundwater around the Karangrejo Landfill, Metro City. Methodology and results: Analysis of leachate water quality was using the Leachate Pollution Index (LPI) assessment method with 18 test parameters at 1 point at the landfill site. The National Sanitary Foundation - Water Quality Index (NSF-WQI) assessment method with 9 test parameters at 15 well points were used to characterize the groundwater around the Karangrejo Landfill. LPI value in Karangrejo Landfill is around 37.9 followed by NSF-WQI values are ranging from 43 until 71 (i.e., Bad-Good category). Moreover, contamination distribution analysis was carried out using a fingerprint diagram approach which indicated that most of the groundwater quality around the landfill still meets the standard due to soil characteristics (i.e., clay soil). The distribution of low groundwater parameter concentrations is found evenly throughout almost all areas, and there is a tendency for similar parameter concentrations. Conclusion, significance and impact study: The contamination analysis approach indicates the presence of leachate contamination at the location closest to the Karangrejo landfill, where the groundwater quality at the closest point has almost the same concentration as the leachate concentration. However, this leachate contamination does not occur massively across the study area. It only occurs at the closest point because the soil and geological structure affect the spread of contaminants and restrain the rate of spread.
