Foreign Aid and Economic Development in Nigeria: an Analytical Review of Military Support, Technology Transfer and Humanitarian Assistance

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: For decades, international development efforts have heavily relied on external financial assistance, particularly to support developing nations struggling with inadequate institutional capabilities, technological deficits, foreign exchange shortages, and low domestic savings. This paper investigates the dual nature—both positive and negative—of international aid on the economic progression of Nigeria, focusing specifically on humanitarian relief, technological adoption, and defense backing. Using a qualitative, historical-descriptive method based on secondary literature, the analysis reveals that external resources have successfully bolstered Nigeria's emergency response, physical infrastructure, human capital, and security apparatus. However, the anticipated developmental dividends are often conditional rather than guaranteed. Persistent challenges such as donor unpredictability, weak accountability, systemic corruption, poor policy harmonization, and fragile institutions consistently undermine these potential benefits. By applying dependency theory, this review explains Nigeria's ongoing reliance on foreign funding, highlighting how inadequate domestic production perpetuates an unbalanced center-periphery dynamic. Ultimately, the paper contends that external funds must complement—not replace—local institutional upgrades and internal revenue generation. It suggests aligning donor support strictly with national goals, enforcing stringent monitoring, and channeling funds into high-impact areas like security, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and technological learning. Establishing a robust coordination mechanism is essential to translate foreign help into permanent economic advancement.
