Therapeutic Mechanisms of Cognitive Processing Therapy in Addressing Post-traumatic Cognitive Alterations

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a trauma-focused psychotherapy designed to treat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is one of the most researched treatments for PTSD. A large number of studies show it is effective, including in patients with complicated presentations, such as comorbid personality disorders and other co-occurring conditions. CPT has the strongest recommendation as a treatment for PTSD in every clinical practice guideline. Researches have shown that 60-80% of individuals who complete CPT experience a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms, making it one of the most effective therapies available. Veterans and trauma survivors report long-term relief and improved quality of life after completing CPT. Compared to other therapies, CPT has been recognized as one of the most effective and structured approaches to PTSD treatment. By challenging negative thought patterns and restructuring beliefs, individuals can regain emotional stability, confidence, and a sense of control over their lives. The aim of the study is to examine CPT mechanism during the trauma-focused psychotherapy based on literature materials.
