Abstract: This study examines the motivations of coca-growing families to enter and abandon illicit crops and remain lawful. It uses qualitative interviews with Alternative Development (AD) participants, complemented by quantitative data. Findings show entry is driven by economic survival, while staying legal seeks family and community well-being. This highlights the need to restructure anti-drug strategies to ensure livelihoods and strengthen social ties.
