Associations of patterns of polysubstance use with treatment outcomes and related comorbidities

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Polysubstance use is common among people seeking treatment for a substance use disorder. Previous work has often focused on either one substance at a time or pairs of substances. In the current study, we propose to examine the effect of mutually exclusive combinations of alcohol, opioid, stimulant, and cannabis use in the month prior to initiating treatment on craving, treatment expectancies and progress, psychiatric comorbidities, sleep problems, and pain at intake and over the course of treatment. We will also examine mutually exclusive combinations of substance use disorder diagnoses, derived from EHR codes as a predictor. Our results will provide insight into particular patterns of pre-treatment substance use that are related to treatment outcomes and comorbidity.
