Experimental and Numerical Framework for Characterization of High-Strength Concrete Fatigue Accounting for Local Dissipative Mechanisms at Subcritical Load Levels
Year: 2026
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The investigation presented in this chapter aim to contribute to the understanding of the fatigue phenomenology of a material zone under well-defined combination of compression and shear loading, a configuration with significant practical relevance. A comprehensive numerical-experimental analysis using the punch-through shear test (PTST) is presented, for prescribed levels of shear and compression in a tested ligament. The microplane model MS1 accurately simulates the degradation process in this multi-axial setup, capturing the dissipative behaviour under subcritical loading at the inter-aggregate level and the fatigue-induced triaxial stress redistribution. The combined numerical-experimental studies cover the PTST response for monotonic, stepwise increasing, and fatigue loading with constant and variable amplitude. In addition, the model provides an energetic interpretation of the effect of fatigue loading sequence which is made possible due to its thermodynamic formulation. The quantified energy dissipation attributed to the individual dissipative mechanisms over the fatigue lifetime shows an almost constant damage-induced dissipation across different loading histories.
