How Migration From Climate-stressed Regions Can Be Utilized to Alleviate Spain’s Labor Shortage

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This thesis studies the intersection of Spain’s demographic labor shortage and the global climate crisis. Whilst often studied in isolation, this research argues that migration from climate-stressed regions in Africa and Latin America can help fill gaps in the Spanish economy. A quantitative analysis of data from 2008 to 2021 reveals that a 10% increase in the population affected by severe weather events correlates with a 1.45% increase in migration from South America to Spain. However, the current reactive framework contributes to talent waste, as 54% of foreign workers with university degrees are overqualified for their current positions. To ensure economic stability, I recommend a policy turn towards ethical government-to-government (G2G) agreements, streamlined recognition of foreign certifications, and scaling green training initiatives.
