Press to Impress‐Diascopy as a Diagnostic Tool for Capillary Haemangioma on the Tongue Tip: A Rare Case Presentation and Review of Literature

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: ABSTRACT Background The presence of ectatic dilated capillaries characterizes capillary haemangiomas. Capillary haemangiomas clinically appear as bright red, flat, macular areas on the skin, oral mucosa, or tongue. Capillary haemangiomas show positive diascopy. Diascopy is a simple clinical test performed by pressing a transparent glass slide or similar object against a skin or mucosal lesion to observe colour changes (blanching). Case Presentation The reported case is the identification of capillary haemangioma on the tip of the tongue in a 71‐year‐old male, based on its clinical appearance as a bright red macular area that blanched on diascopy. Conclusion The case report highlights the importance and value of the diascopy test, a non‐invasive, rapid, chairside test for diagnosing a capillary haemangioma on the tip of the tongue. It also emphasizes the importance of diascopy, whenever suspected coloured lesions occur in the oral cavity, and the need for future studies of this chairside test with portable imaging techniques such as portable colour Doppler ultrasound devices as point of care testing in remote areas and mobile applications using digital photographs or videos integrated with artificial intelligence software tools for precise, rapid evaluation of diascopic patterns of blanching to identify suspected coloured vascular lesions in the oral cavity.
