Year: 2026
Type: article
Childhood asthma is a common chronic respiratory disease, and effective disease control depends on long-term, standardized pharmacotherapy. As a cornerstone of primary health care, general practitioners play an irreplaceable role in the long-term management of childhood asthma. This article examines the implementation pathways and core value of general practice in medication guidance for childhood asthma, systematically reviews the fundamental principles of pharmacotherapy, and focuses on practical strategies for individualized medication planning, standardized inhaler-technique training, and improvement of parental understanding. Medication-guidance strategies are also proposed for typical clinical scenarios, including acute exacerbations, stable disease, and special populations. Furthermore, a quality-assurance mechanism centered on follow-up monitoring, two-way referral, and capacity building is developed. In response to current challenges in practice, the application of digital tools and multi-stakeholder collaboration is proposed to help improve the overall level of asthma control among children in China. The article additionally introduces phenotype stratification feasible in primary care and adherence interventions based on health-behavior theories and motivational interviewing, provides a dedicated discussion of implementation barriers and corresponding strategies in Chinese primary care, and acknowledges limitations such as the lack of empirical validation of the proposed theoretical framework.
