Abstract: We propose a research perspective that connects privileged mobilities with the study of social cohesion and formation of collective identities. The intersections among these three fields offer underexplored analytical possibilities. Specifically, they allow for advancing the understanding of realities that are more conflictive than a superficial approach might suggest. Such conflict compels us to position the reflection on the meaning of privileged mobilities within a system of power relations characterised by instability and uncertainty. Those involved in this system seek to define reality in ways that serve their interests, while simultaneously generating impacts that are not always evident. This proposal adopts a critical approach and is presented at a theoretical level although, as will be seen, it is intimately linked to very recognisable realities. Specifically, we take as reference four seemingly disconnected situations: the questioning of the term ‘lifestyle migration’; the implications of the way of life known as ‘digital nomadism’; the redefinition of tourism as a social problem; and the consequences of Brexit for British residents in southern Spain. The analysis of these four realities leads to conclusions where we emphasise the common denominators. We also underscore two essential issues: (a) the need to delve into the political dimensions surrounding privileged mobilities and (b) the advisability of placing ethical aspects at the centre of epistemological concerns.
