The Association of Prenatal Education Classes on Fear of Childbirth and Pregnancy-Related Anxiety: A Prospective Comparative Study
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objective: A significant portion of the complications that may arise during pregnancy and childbirth can be prevented through education and appropriate care approaches. This study aims to evaluate the association of prenatal education class attendance with pregnancy-related anxiety, fear of childbirth, and obstetric outcomes. Methods:This prospective observational comparative study was conducted with third-trimester pregnant women at the Obstetrics Clinic of Etlik City Hospital between August and December 2025. Participants were divided into two groups: those attending prenatal classes (intervention group) and those who did not (control group). Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the Pregnancy Anxiety Questionnaire (PRAQ-R2), and the Fear of Childbirth Scale; the obstetric outcomes of the groups were compared. Results:A total of 348 pregnant women were included in the study (125 in the intervention group, 223 in the control group). A significant association was found between educational level and participation in the program. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups in terms of gestational age and birth weight. In addition, no association was found between mode of delivery and prenatal education. However, a significant difference was found between PRAQ-R2 childbirth anxiety subscale scores and participation in education; childbirth anxiety scores among pregnant women who did not receive education were significantly higher than those who did. Conclusion: Although prenatal education does not significantly change birth outcomes, it stands out as an effective intervention in reducing fear of childbirth, regardless of the type of delivery.
