Impactos do uso da creatina no eixo músculo-cérebro em gerontologia: uma revisão bibliográfica

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Creatine supplementation emerges as a promising therapeutic intervention for the muscle-brain axis in older adults. This study is characterized as a qualitative literature review, with searches conducted in high-impact databases (PubMed, SciELO, Google Scholar, and CAPES Journals), selecting articles published between 2020 and 2026 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The included studies analyzed the effects of creatine on muscle mass, strength, functionality, and cognition in older adults. The results demonstrate that creatine supplementation associated with resistance training promotes significant gains in lean mass (1–2 kg over 8–12 weeks) and muscle strength, with a direct impact on the prevention of sarcopenia. Mechanistically, creatine enhances ATP resynthesis, activates anabolic pathways such as mTOR, and reduces oxidative stress. In the cognitive domain, consistent improvements were observed in short-term memory, processing speed, and executive functions, particularly in older adults with Alzheimer’s disease, in whom supplementation demonstrated safety and the ability to stabilize cognitive domains. Creatine modulates the muscle-brain axis through the release of myokines and neurotrophic factors, exerting multifaceted neuroprotective effects. It is concluded that creatine supplementation represents a low-cost intervention with a high safety profile and proven efficacy for promoting brain health and functionality in older adults, establishing itself as an adjunct therapeutic strategy in geriatric medicine.
