Abstract: In this contribution to Strangeness in Quark Matter 2026, I review the open quantum systems approach, a modern theoretical framework for addressing the interaction of a quantum system with its environment, and highlight recent progress in its application to the understanding of in-medium heavy quarkonium in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.
