Abstract: To the Editor, A previously healthy 7-month-old boy (born at 35 weeks' gestation) developed respiratory failure after 7 days of cough and wheeze and 2 days of fever.Nasal washings were positive for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).He was treated with mechanical ventilation, systemic steroids, bronchodilators, and antibiotics; he was extubated 5 days after admission.Five days later, while still hospitalized, he developed a recurrence of fever, tachypnea, and retractions.A chest radiograph demonstrated a left lower lobe opacity, and he required reintubation on Day 11 of hospitalization.Repeat nasal washings were positive for Adenovirus. He was mechanically ventilated for an additional 11 days.He gradually improved and was discharged 31 days after admission without supplemental oxygen.
