Abstract: This scoping review aims to map and synthesize the available scientific evidence regarding the association between genetic variants (polymorphisms and SNPs), haplotype profiles, or plasma levels of the MMP-2 gene and protein and susceptibility to diabetes mellitus (types 1 and 2), as well as the development and progression of its chronic musculoskeletal and vascular complications (micro- and macrovascular, such as nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular events).
