Community-Based Education Alumni and Their Contributions to Non-Profit Organizations
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study examines how the Wide Horizons Organizational Development Program (WH) has influenced alumni leadership development, skill application, and the opportunities and challenges they encounter in Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs). WH fosters an inclusive and diverse community of individuals from different ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, united to develop their NPOs through learning Community Development (CD), English, and Computer skills. Despite nearly two decades of implementation, no study has systematically examined the long-term impact of WH alumni, particularly regarding their leadership development. Understanding this connection is critical for evaluating whether the WH program achieves its objectives and effectively supports alumni leadership. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the research combines quantitative surveys of 190 WH alumni with in-depth interviews of fifteen alumni. Survey results show that 71.05% of alumni are currently employed in NPOs; among them, 76.9% hold leadership positions within their organizations. This research provides insights for Community-Based Education (CBE) policymakers and educators in conflict-affected contexts to support leadership development and better understand how CBE programs foster leadership and contribute to community transformation in developing countries.
