Paratext and Thanatopoetics in Tite Kubo's Bleach: A Close Reading of Three Volume Epigraphs

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Each of the seventy four tankobon volumes of Tite Kubo's Bleach (2001-2016) opens with a short epigraph poem keyed to the character the volume foregrounds. This note treats that corpus as a paratextual system in Genette's sense and offers close readings of three epigraphs: the rain poem of Volume 3, the equivalence poem of Volume 63, and the formless-persistence poem of Volume 74. I argue that the epigraphs function as a compressed thematic code for the series: the rain poem inverts folkloric separation into mediation; the equivalence poem axiomatizes the thanatopoetics of the aspect of death; the final poem retrospectively converts the fear of death into formless persistence. Read as a system, the paratext constitutes the work's thesis statement.
