Unveiling the success of PIX: a Brazilian mobile instant payment system

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: The proliferation of mobile technologies and the exponential growth of mobile subscriptions worldwide have led to significant opportunities for payment systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Through online platforms, mobile instant payment systems have emerged as facilitators of financial inclusion and reduced banking transaction costs. In this vein, the success of a mobile instant payment system—PIX—developed by the Central Bank of Brazil presents an intriguing case for understanding the determinants of continued use intention of mobile payment apps. Therefore, data were collected from June 2023 to September 2023 through an online survey distributed via the authors’ social networks and contacts, resulting in a final sample of 312 participants. Then, via structural equation modeling, it was set forth that perceived critical mass, trust, relative advantage, and affordable cost impact user satisfaction with PIX, which, in turn, influences users’ intention to continue using PIX. This study thus presents empirical evidence and theoretical support to better understand the rapid and successful dissemination of PIX, providing valuable insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and researchers so that more features for this application can be designed and implemented, leading it to reach the entire potential Brazilian population and aiming to make it a benchmark for mobile instant payment systems in low- and middle-income countries.
