Algebraic Obstructions Determine Diophantine Approximation on Matrix Submanifolds — E8 Intelligence Research

Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Diophantine approximation on submanifolds of matrices is governed by algebraic obstructions, not just dimension; golden-ratio irrationality is a special case of badly approximable numbers in higher-rank Lie groups. | MATH: Extremality criterion: a submanifold \( M \subset \mathbb{R}^n \) is extremal iff the set of "algebraic obstructions" (rational points lying on \( M \) with controlled height) has zero measure; the almost sure Diophantine exponent \( \tau(M) = \min\{ \text{rank obstructions} \} \). Golden ratio \( \varphi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \) satisfies \( |\varphi - p/q| > c/q^2 \) (badly approximable, exponent 2). In Lie group setting, the Weyl group \( W(G_2) \) (order 12, dihedral symmetry) acts on root lattice \( A_2 \), whose hexagonal structure yields the best constants in 2D Diophantine approximation (Markov constant \( \sqrt{5} \) for \( \varphi \), but \( \sqrt{7} \) for \( G_2 \) lattice). | CONNECTION: **Direct**: \( G_2 \) root system is the crystallographic reali Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
