I See Nothing . . . Atheism as the Condition of Credible Theological Grammar

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: How can theology maintain credibility when belief in God is optional? This article argues that atheism functions as the existential ground for credible theological grammar in post-Christendom contexts. Examining Tomáš Halík’s recuperation of atheism as ‘impatience with God’ and Emmanuel Falque’s phenomenological treatment of ‘seeing nothing’ as the fundamental human condition, I propose that experiential atheism constitutes theology’s methodological imperative. Grounded in incarnational logic, credible theology must begin with shared finitude rather than transcendent certainties.
