Assessment of the Vulnerability of Logistics Routes

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The resilience of transport and logistics systems largely depends on the ability of major logistics routes to preserve accessibility, throughput, and the realization of required flows when individual infrastructure components are disrupted.Conventional route assessment is predominantly based on structural characteristics, including route length, the number of nodes and links, the availability of alternative paths, and the topological centrality of individual network elements. However, this approach is insufficient for interdependent transport and logistics systems because the physical preservation of a route does not necessarily imply the preservation of its functional operability [1][2][3][4][5].This problem becomes particularly important under complex disruptions, where a primary impact on one infrastructure component may generate secondary functional consequences beyond the directly affected segment.Failure of a transport node, powersupply system, dispatching facility, or information and communication subsystem may reduce route capacity, impair flow management, or make formally intact infrastructure operationally unavailable [2-5].Consequently, the vulnerability of a logistics route is determined not only by its internal structure but also by the configuration of its dependencies on adjacent infrastructure systems.Previous studies [1, 2] established two complementary foundations for vulnerability analysis of transport and logistics systems. The systemic-risk taxonomy proposed in [1] formalized disruption scenarios through threat domain, topological target level, primary functional effect, temporal profile, spatial localization, and cascading mechanism, while [2] focused specifically on the role of interlayer dependencies in shaping logistics-system vulnerability. The present study extends these concepts to the level of individual logistics routes by shifting the unit of analysis from the disruption scenario itself to the functional response of a particular route.
