Five new Oscan inscriptions from Rossano di Vaglio: an epigraphic and linguistic commentary
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Five new Oscan inscripons, wrien in the Greek alphabet, were found at Rossano di Vaglio in 2024 and published in 2025. This contribuon is the first detailed epigraphic and linguisc commentary on the new inscripons, following the edio princeps by the excavators. Points of parcular note include: the use of lunate leer shapes found in the inscripons; the origin of ‘Jupiter Pīdios’ aested in two inscripons and disproving a connecon to Jupiter Fidius; possible readings for the sequence ‘επιδισις’, which we see as a likely personal name Epidis Is-; new understandings of the goddess Diowia Duomana/Diomana from a newly aested spelling variant; the new spelling variant νιμζις of a common Oscan praenomen; and the possible etymologies of the newly aested word ρεστοf. 1.
