Abstract: This letter introduces an asymmetric temporal ramp modulation scheme for event-camera-based optical communication, in which information is encoded through the ramp peak position to control the rising and falling slopes and the resulting ON- and OFF-event dynamics. Unlike approaches based primarily on discrete pulses or event timing, the proposed scheme uses a single physically interpretable asymmetry parameter to generate distinct bipolar event signatures for multilevel symbol discrimination, while maintaining the same nominal mean intensity across the designed modulation symbols. Experimental results show that, at 1.5 m, the proposed scheme achieves BERs of 8.47 × 10⁻⁵ and 1.0 × 10⁻² at 20 and 40 kbps, respectively, compared with 3.3 × 10⁻² and 1.0 × 10⁻¹ for event-based OOK. These results demonstrate the potential of multilevel optical waveform shaping tailored to the change-sensing nature of event cameras.
