Penrose Tilings: Golden-Ratio Rhombi in Math and Islamic Art — E8 Intelligence Research

Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Penrose tilings are non-periodic, 5-fold symmetric tessellations generated by two rhombic prototiles with angles in golden-ratio proportions, discovered by Roger Penrose (1970s) and later found in medieval Islamic architecture (Lu & Steinhardt, 2007). | MATH: Two prototiles — thin rhombus (angles 36°/144°) and thick rhombus (72°/108°); edge lengths equal, areas in ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. Inflation/deflation substitution rules scale by φ² ≈ 2.618. Vertex configurations obey matching rules; Fourier transform yields sharp Bragg peaks (quasicrystal order). | CONNECTION: Direct golden-ratio saturation: 0.618 = 1/φ, 0.382 = 1/φ², 1.618 = φ, 2.618 = φ². 5-fold rotational symmetry (forbidden in periodic crystals) is realized via aperiodic order. The tiling's self-similarity under scaling by φ² links to Fibonacci recursion. | DEPTH: 8 — This shattered the crystallographic restriction theorem (no 5-fold symmetry in periodic lattices), forcing a new definition of "crystal" (aperiodic Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
