Abstract: Multiple myeloma (MM) remains a challenging disease in South Asia not only because of its noncurative potential but largely because of the nonaffordability and nonavailability of the treatment.1 Autologous stem cell transplantation has long been and is still an integral part of myeloma treatment modality and is widely available in higher-income countries. In many low-income countries, hematopoietic stem cell transplants are not available, and even when they are available in the larger cities, they remain financially unaffordable to most patients.High incidence of bacterial and fungal infection, nonavailability of various chemotherapies used for conditioning regimens, and scarcity of skilled health care workers add to the challenges in the establishment of transplant centers.
