59 Early psychosocial support after a brain tumour diagnosis: a collaborative model between Southmead Hospital and Brain Tumour Support
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction A pilot referral pathway between Southmead Hospital and Brain Tumour Support (BTS) was introduced to provide early psychosocial support to patients diagnosed with a brain tumour and their families. This evaluation assessed uptake, perceived value, and service impact. Method Over six months, 115 patients and family members were referred to BTS; 10 declined or did not respond. Referrals included newly diagnosed patients, individuals undergoing investigations and supporting relatives. Tumour types were high-grade (n = 55), low-grade (n = 17), metastatic (n = 18), and unknown grade (n = 20). A nine-question survey was distributed to all individuals who received support between April and October 2023. Results Most respondents (88%) found contact at or near diagnosis useful and valued ongoing support. Reported benefits included continuity of care, reassurance, reduced isolation and access to peer support. Virtual groups and early counselling were particularly valued. Overall, 92% felt less alone, 60% reported having a safe space for emotional support and 24% accessed practical or financial help they might not otherwise have sought. While 69% felt their needs were fully met, others accessed additional services, including hospice care. Only 6% were aware of BTS before referral. Referrals from the Southmead area increased by 161% compared with the preceding six months and emotional support calls to the hospital team decreased by 50%. Community survey data (2026) reinforced these findings, with 70% indicating early referral would have been beneficial. Conclusion Early referral at diagnosis is highly valued, reduces isolation and improves engagement with supportive services. The model is now embedded within the Southmead pathway, with plans for roll out to other sites. These findings highlight the importance of integrated psychosocial support in neuro-oncology care.
