Focalized resistance and prevented identification: Narrative perspective in Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies and Anthony Doerr's Cloud Cuckoo Land

Type: article
Abstract: This article proposes a comparative analysis of narrative focalization in Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies (2008) and Anthony Doerr's Cloud Cuckoo Land (2021). Using a comparative close reading approach that prioritizes duration of focalization, the study argues that Ghosh employs sustained internal focalization across a rotating cast of subaltern characters – opium workers, mixed-race sailors, and bankrupt zamindars – restoring interiority to figures whom colonial archives rendered mute. Doerr, by contrast, deploys fragmented focalization: rapid shifts between characters and centuries that tend to prevent sustained readerly identification, mirroring the disorientation of ecological collapse. The study proposes two concepts – focalized resistance to theorize Ghosh's restoration of subaltern agency, and prevented identification to capture Doerr's strategic withholding of sustained access – and argues these divergent strategies correspond to different historical conditions: colonial capitalism (which demands sustained subaltern consciousness as a counter-archive) and the Anthropocene (which demands fragmentation as a formally honest response to scales exceeding human cognition). These concepts are proposed to extend Genette's narratological framework by demonstrating that focalization type alone is insufficient; duration, continuity, and interruption determine its political effects. The analysis suggests that narrative perspective can be understood not as a neutral formal device but as a historically situated political practice, and that the question of who sees and who speaks is argued here to be a question of justice.
