Type: dissertation
Abstract: Where other major cities’ electronic music cultures have been considered in terms of their co-existence with the HIV/AIDS epidemic, this line of analysis remains largely unexplored in Detroit. In Discotheque Gothic, I conducted seven in-depth qualitative interviews with participants in Detroit's electronic music culture in the summer and fall of 2025, exploring the role of the epidemic in their creative and social lives. Organized through the spaces, social norms, and sounds that defined it, Discotheque Gothic is a comprehensive history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the context of Detroit electronic music culture.
