Metal‐Catalyzed Transformations of Carbon Dioxide Toward the Production of Commodity Chemicals
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This perspective examines advances in catalytic methods for converting CO 2 into value‐added commodity chemicals through a future‐facing research and development‐focused viewpoint. As such, select examples that we identify as representative of the field in both mature and underdeveloped technologies are discussed. Transition‐metal catalysis has enabled progress toward the production of acrylic acid derivatives, methylmalonic acids, and cyclic carbonates, despite CO 2 ’s inherent stability. In contrast, other promising transformations, such as the synthesis of amino acids from CO 2 , remain limited by high costs, narrow substrate scope, and poor stereocontrol. Overall, CO 2 utilization offered significant potential as an economic means for sustainable chemical manufacturing while highlighting the need for further catalytic innovation.
