Abstract: This reflection describes how John Flavell’s mentorship helped transform an inexperienced Stanford undergraduate into a developmental scientist. What began with a series of serendipitous events – my impulsive application to the Stanford Oxford overseas program and an unexpected visit to John’s office – evolved into decades of scientific inquiry because John recognized my potential before I could. His willingness to welcome me into his intellectual community, take my questions and ideas seriously, and encourage empirical investigation ultimately led me to pursue a PhD and a career in developmental science. Looking back more than thirty years later, I argue that John’s greatest legacy extends beyond his scientific contributions to the example he set as a mentor who cultivated curiosity, confidence, and possibility in others.
