Adolescent Insecticide Exposure and ADHD Risk: Long-term Epigenetic Mechanisms
Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: Adolescent brain development is sensitive to exposures and has impacts on neurobehavioral functioning. Insecticide exposure may impact executive and attentional brain circuits, which mature during adolescence, but the mechanisms driving long-term neurobehavioral risk, including for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), remain poorly understood. The epigenome, which is sensitive to the environment, represents a potential mediator of long-term neurobehavioral effects and potential biomarkers of exposure. The experiments proposed here will help determine whether adolescent insecticide exposure (chlorpyrifos and α-cypermethrin) alters the epigenome, thereby modifying risk for developing neurobehavioral symptoms and neuropsychiatric disorders.
