Abstract: ABSTRACT Electrosynthesis has emerged as a sustainable alternative for urea production as an essential chemical, attracting growing research interest. This review discusses the major challenges facing the field and outlines three promising strategies to overcome them: catalyst microenvironment engineering, in situ CO 2 generation from bicarbonate/carbonate electrolytes, and the establishment of three-phase reaction interfaces. Together, these approaches could unlock significant improvements in efficiency and productivity, accelerating the development of urea electrosynthesis as a viable and sustainable technology.
