Exploring the antecedents and outcomes of mindfulness at the workplace: a systematic literature review

Year: 2026
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: The study explores the role of mindfulness in the workplace by investigating its antecedents, underlying mechanisms, and outcomes. It provides a thorough synthesis of existing knowledge by combining bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review (SLR), offering both quantitative mapping of the field and qualitative insights. The findings highlight the paucity of research on antecedents and the under-representation of Eastern elements in Western-focused studies. The study highlights its relevance to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3—Good Health and Well-being—by emphasizing the positive benefits of mindfulness on employee health, performance, work-life balance, and organizational sustainability. A systematic review of 93 studies published between 2014 and 2025 was conducted using the PRISMA approach. The year 2014 was deliberately selected due to the surge in workplace mindfulness research after this year. Additionally, bibliometric analysis was performed to map the research landscape, highlighting trends and gaps. The review identified key antecedents influencing mindfulness and its positive impacts on workplace outcomes such as performance, relationships, and well-being. It underscored the importance of integrating Eastern perspectives, often overlooked, and proposed a conceptual model linking antecedents to workplace outcomes. This framework lays a foundation for future research on the long-term effects of mindfulness in organizational settings. Besides its psychological effects, it emphasizes the potential of mindfulness as a strategic resource to promote ethical, sustainable, and positive work environments and proposes a research agenda to further explore its mechanisms and cultural dimensions. This review was retrospectively registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF; DOI: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/TEGU4 ).
