Co-construction of meaning in videogames: a multimodal pragmatic approach

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In the context of digitalisation of communication, new types of discourse are emerging that require reconsidering traditional linguistic models of analysis. One such phenomenon is the videogame – a complex multimodal system in which verbal, visual and auditory codes function as complementary channels of meaning generation (Пожарицька, 2021). The theoretical basis of the study is provided by the principles of multimodality theory (Kress & Leeuwen, 2020), the concept of digital discourse (Crystal, 2001), and the ideas of “digital modernism” (Kirby, 2009). The main emphasis is on the practical analysis of the verbal and structural organisation of videogames. The aim of the study is to determine the linguistic and pragmatic status of videogames and to justify the possibility of treating them as a specific type of interactive artistic discourse. Our analysis is based on 23 English-language games of various genres (action, quest, philosophical puzzle, etc).
