Applying of Canadian water quality index (CCME-WQI) for evaluation groundwater in Basrah province

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The Canadian Water Quality Index (CCME-WQI) was used to determine groundwater suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes in three area at Basra province, southern Iraq. Carried out by subjecting 72 well samples of groundwater were collected seasonally from July 2024 to April 2025 for physiochemical parameters analysis including: pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biological oxygen Demand (BOD5), Nitrates (NO3), Turbidity (Turb), Total Hardness (TH), Calcium (Ca+2), Magnesium (Mg+2), Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Chloride (Cl-), Boron (B), Sulfate (SO4), Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR). Also, Fecal coliform bacteria (FC)were measured. The results showed that groundwater is not suitable for drinking and irrigation. It was found that the low value of CCME -WQI, which ranged between (14.7 - 28.7) for drinking and (9.5 -12.8) for irrigation describing water as poor, this is mainly due to the high value of all measured parameters which exceeded the permissible limits except PH, DO, BOD5 and turbidity which were within the permissible limits.
