Attachment Microanatomy and Synovio-Entheseal Considerations in the Temporomandibular Joint
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is traditionally described as a synovial articulation composed of the mandibular condyle, articular disc, capsule, and supporting ligaments. Contemporary understanding of TMJ function recognizes the coordinated interaction of the disc–condyle complex, capsular and ligamentous structures, and multiple masticatory muscles in generating coupled rotational and translational movements. The articular disc is widely regarded as a stress-distributing structure, while capsular and ligamentous components contribute to joint stability under dynamic loading conditions.
