The Fixed Point: Unifying Recursion Across Logic, Computation, and Analysis — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Fixed-point operators unify recursion across logic, computation, and analysis — the self-referential kernel of iterative structure. | MATH: Fixed point equation \( f(x^*) = x^* \); Y-combinator \( Y = \lambda f.(\lambda x.f(xx))(\lambda x.f(xx)) \) satisfies \( Yf = f(Yf) \); bisection root-finding converges linearly with error ratio \( \frac{1}{2} \) per step; infinitary fixed-point logic extends \( \mu \)-calculus with least/greatest fixed points \( \mu X.\phi(X), \nu X.\phi(X) \). | CONNECTION: The golden ratio \( \varphi = 1.618... \) is the nontrivial fixed point of \( f(x) = 1 + 1/x \), and \( 1/\varphi = 0.618... \); the silver ratio \( 1+\sqrt{2} = 2.414... \) arises from \( f(x) = 2 + 1/x \). The bisection error ratio \( 1/2 \) is the degenerate case of the metallic means \( (n + \sqrt{n^2+4})/2 \) at \( n=0 \). Fixed-point iteration \( x_{k+1} = f(x_k) \) converges when \( |f'(x^*)| < 1 \) — for \( f(x) = 1 + 1/x \), \( |f'(\varphi)| = 1/\varphi^2 = 0.382... \), the Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
