Abstract: FINDING: The dihedral group D₄ (symmetry group of the square) provides the structural backbone for both lattice hypergroups and Turing machine state-transition graphs, linking discrete symmetry to computational complexity. | MATH: D₄ has 8 elements: {e, r, r², r³, s, sr, sr², sr³} with relations r⁴ = e, s² = e, srs = r⁻¹. Its irreducible representations: 4 one-dimensional (trivial, sign, two mixed) and 1 two-dimensional (standard). The group algebra ℂ[D₄] ≅ ℂ⁴ ⊕ M₂(ℂ). The square lattice's hypergroup convolution structure is governed by D₄'s double cosets. For Turing machines, the BB(5) proof (if complete) requires exhaustive analysis of 5-state, 2-symbol machines — 2^(5×2) = 1024 transition rules per machine, with state graphs exhibiting D₄-like reflection/rotation symmetries in their transition matrices. | CONNECTION: D₄ is the crystallographic point group of the square lattice (p4m wallpaper group's finite subgroup). Its rotation subgroup C₄ generates 90° symmetries; the reflection Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series. Platform: e8intelligence.com
