Year: 2026

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Purpose The United Arab Emirates (UAE) requires optimal participation of citizens in its STEM workforce to develop the country's knowledge economy. In this study, students’ indications of science capital (measured by proxy using items adapted from previous survey questionnaires) were investigated to see how this construct interacted with their science career aspirations. Design/Approach/Method This study utilizes a theoretical framework of science capital wherein a combination of factors, including students’ school and home experiences of science, may indicate future science aspirations. The participants were 429 middle and high school students from government schools in Abu Dhabi. Findings Overall, it was observed that science capital performed as a significant construct in this context, and that the relationship between science capital and science-related career aspirations is positive and significant. This may be an important factor in predicting Abu Dhabi students’ future career plans. Originality/Value Science capital as a construct has not been validated in the UAE before, so the relationship between science capital and related career aspirations may be an important and novel factor in mapping career aspirations. Recommendations are made to improve the science capital of students in Abu Dhabi and in the UAE more generally.
