Year: 2026
Type: article
Drawing on the Gospel account of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35) and contrasting it with his own experience as a migrant, the author reflects on the fear, trauma, persecution, and vulnerability that undocumented immigrants face in the United States under the current administration’s mass deportation policies and the dominant anti-immigrant narratives in society. Now a bishop, the author also briefly outlines what he perceives to be the core challenges and necessary pastoral responses that this critical situation entails for the country, affirming Christian hospitality as an essential response to the drama of 21st-century migration. Finally, he calls on the Catholic Church not to lose sight of the ethical horizon set by the Chirst (Mt 25) and not to remain indifferent to the ongoing tragedy of global migration.
