High-performance cobalt-based model superalloy with aging-stable <101> texture and uniform γ′ precipitates by laser powder bed fusion

Abstract: Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) enables the fabrication of strong crystallographic textures, but post-process heat treatments often trigger recrystallization that degrades the as-built microstructure. We demonstrate that a LPBF‑fabricated Co‑5Al‑14V (at.%) alloy exhibits a pronounced <101>//BD (Building Direction) texture that remains stable after aging near the γ′ solvus, resulting in a unique microstructure combining strong texture with uniformly distributed γ′ precipitates. This study systematically investigates microstructural evolution, texture stability, and γ′ precipitation under different heat treatment conditions (as‑printed, directly aged, and solution‑treated plus aged). We perform a qualitative assessment of the combined microstructural contributions from dislocation substructures, precipitate distribution, and recrystallization to the mechanical properties. The alloy achieves an exceptional strength‑ductility synergy with an ultimate tensile strength of ∼1 GPa and uniform elongation of 20%. These findings provide fundamental insights into microstructure–mechanical interactions in LPBF‑manufactured cobalt‑based superalloys and guide the design of next‑generation superalloys.
