Continued Fractions Unify Fibonacci, Euclid, and Quintic Harmony — E8 Intelligence Research
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: FINDING: Continued fractions unify Fibonacci convergents, Euclidean algorithm, and even the general quintic via Rogers–Ramanujan, revealing a recursive lattice of rational approximations to irrational harmony. MATH: - Fibonacci convergents: \(F_{n+1}/F_n \to \varphi = \frac{1+\sqrt5}{2} = 1.6180339887...\) - Continued fraction of \(\varphi\): \([1;1,1,1,\dots]\) — all partial quotients = 1. - Convergents satisfy \(p_n q_{n-1} - p_{n-1} q_n = (-1)^n\) (determinant ±1, unimodular). - Euclidean algorithm: \(\gcd(a,b)\) via successive remainders — the same recursion as continued fraction partial quotients. - Square root expansions: \(\sqrt{n} = [a_0;\overline{a_1,a_2,\dots,2a_0}]\) — periodic, Pell-type. - Rogers–Ramanujan continued fraction: \(R(q) = \frac{q^{1/5}}{1+\frac{q}{1+\frac{q^2}{1+\cdots}}}\), with \(q = e^{2\pi i \tau}\). Quintic solvable via \(R(q)\) — a known algebraic function of \(R\). CONNECTION: - Golden ratio convergents \(1/1, 2/1, 3/2, 5/3, 8/5, 13/8, Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
