Year: 2026
Type: article
This chapter presents the Catholic Church’s theological and pastoral framework for addressing the crisis of forced migration in the Mexico–United States corridor. The author characterizes contemporary migration both as a “social wound” and a “sign of the times,” arguing that the Gospel must enter public discourse to foster a more humane society. The chapter underscores key ethical pillars, including the right to migrate and the right to remain, and situates them within an increasingly negative narrative surrounding immigrants and U.S. policies of mass deportation. As an introductory chapter, it previews the book’s four-part structure—see, judge, act, and strengthen hope—while advocating for a “theology of open eyes” that bridges theology and social reality. Ultimately, by opening the conversation toward the immediate future, the author contends that the Catholic Church’s mission is credible only insofar as it takes concrete action to “welcome, protect, promote, and integrate” those displaced by injustice.
